A Gateway to the Shawangunk Ridge and Beyond
Wallkill Valley
Rail Trail
The Hudson Valley and Wallkill Valley contain an extensive network of hiking and rail trails. For those visiting Little Logan’s Farm, the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail serves as a literal neighbor and a primary connection to the surrounding landscape. As the southern terminus begins right here in Gardiner, the farm is perfectly situated for guests looking to step directly onto one of the region's most iconic paths for a day of exploration.
Gardiner: The Southern Terminus
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail begins at Denniston Road in Gardiner and travels north for 5.7 miles through Gardiner into New Paltz. Within the New Paltz section, the trail becomes part of the Empire State Trail. This beginning section is right around the corner from Little Logan’s Farm, making it an effortless addition to any visit or stay.
The New Paltz Stretch
From Gardiner, the path continues north along the east side of the Wallkill River before crossing the Springtown Bridge. After the crossing, the trail follows the west side of the river, where it runs closer to the Shawangunk Mountains opposite the Marlboro Mountains along the Hudson River.
Rosendale and Beyond
The trail completes its 6.5-mile stretch through New Paltz and enters the town of Rosendale. Here, the surrounding terrain becomes more rugged as the trail moves through increasingly mountainous landscapes. This section connects with trails in the Mohonk Preserve and the northern end of the Shawangunk Ridge Trail (SRT), which follows the length of the ridge into New Jersey and eventually connects with the Appalachian Trail. The rail trail crosses Rondout Creek on the Rosendale Trestle, just west of Joppenbergh Mountain.
Kingston Connection
After 7.8 miles in Rosendale, the trail continues for its final 1.5 miles in the town of Ulster, terminating at Route 32 near the border between the town of Ulster and the city of Kingston. Published total lengths for the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail vary, with figures commonly cited between 21 and 23 miles.
